(Hey Why) Miss You Sometimes - 10/9
F*** the production is lit. It sounds like a theme song playing in the ending credits for a cool, 90's computer game. It doesn't sound like a P!nk song at all that's why I love it so much. It has this laid-back, swingy vibe, and the bridge is SO DAMN GOOD. I can't stop JAMMING to it. After all the missteps Max Martin finally delivered a song which should be a single. I can picture a retro, Nintendo style music video to it. Urgh.
My Attic - 10/9
I got teary eyed. The lyrics hit me hard, mabye that's why. Thank God for Julia, although Barbies wasn't really for me, this one hit a soft spot. It's pretty much about my attic, hidden really deep that I barely give keys to. Also, her vocal runs in the end is stunning.
90 Days - 10/10000000000000
Bon Iver meets M83 meets P!nk. I could have never imagined this happening but this might be her BEST SONG SINCE...FOREVER. The lyrics, the music, the computer voice, the tuned back piano. It's ambient, it's post-rock, it's indie. Her voice after the second chorus during "slowlyyyy". Fuck. This is a type of a music I adore but I could have never pictured her doing it, and she's doing it so well. I'm schocked pretty much. Might be my favorite song of hers, all time. F***. It's deep, it's dark, it's hurtful yet it's healing, it's death with a beam of hope.
- at this point I'm getting more and more mad at the music business and her team. This song should have been released before the album. I hate seeing her doing songs like this good and don't reach people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Courage - 10/5
I WISH this one wouldn't be like any other Sia song. I actually enjoyed it but with a non-really-Sia chorus it could have been much better. I really like the production, sounds really clear and fresh. The piano and the dramatic drum sounds pretty neat. But once again really Sia. They could have gone to a producer who could mix it differently, such good material but needs more originality. Most skippable track on the record but I'll keep checking back for some mindless loud shower singing sessions, going crazy in the last chorus!
Happy - 10/10
I would place somewhere around M!ss and TT. It sounds really old school, something I would imagine Linda and her writing together. It definitely feels like Don't Let Me Get Me's adult version, better and deeper. The lyrics are pretty amazing, especially that they're really heartwrenching in a way, and it's so sad to see her struggling with herself like this. The whole album is really depressing but this one stands out for the most for me - maybe because we've been with her since ages and she's still hurting herself this much.
We Could Have it All - 10/8
Beautiful production! You can tell this was written around TTAL, something that would fit on the bonus tracks version, between Chaos&Piss and Timebomb. I really dig the 80s vibe production, with a little guitar in the background which gives such an ambient, nostalgic vibe to it. "Everybody thought we would be the ones" melody in the pre-chorus is pretty great. I don't like that they tuned her voice back in the chorus, but her singing "we could have it all, we could have it all" in the background gives such a nice, retro feeling to the whole thing.
Love Me Anyway - 10/4
Nice country song. That's it. Good for weddings.
Circle Game - 10/6
The Great Escape dark twin. I love the chello playing in the verse. I thought - since it's about her being a mother - I wouldn't really care, but the lyrics are more universal - "Count your lucky stars that you've got the chance to play in the circle game" line actually reminds me of I Am Here. I adore that it's about life in general and how grateful we have to be. I feel like if I Am Here could be on this record (rightfully), this one could be one of her best records.
The Last Song Of Your Life - 10/8
Crystal Ball reworked by The Beatles. Absolutely stunning lyrics, vocals, vibe, guitar. Billy never disappoints. Once again, general thoughts about life - something I wished she would have sung about because she has not really touched this topic since I'm Not Dead. But I feel like the last 3 songs are a mini rose ave. on this album, maybe that's why I like them. But this song could have worked much better with different, more uptempo songs before it.
Overall I'm shockingly surprised. The whole album sounds fresh with amazing productions. It touches so many music genres, might be her most diverse album so far. The whole vibe is nostalgic, dark and bittersweet - right in my alley. It's more about life, her feelings than love like TTAL or BT - and finally it's a nice breath of fresh air after all these years.
This could be M!ssundaztood's, I'm Not Dead's and rose ave.'s lovechild which make me love it really much and I'm sure it will be loved by a lot from here too!
