Be careful about using chemicals in clogged drains, certain chemicals can do serious damage to your pipes, leading to flooding. I've heard a mixture of baking soda and vinegar (and probably something else too) is just as effective as chemicals.

Hmmm vinegar + baking soda just creates water and CO2 sooo not so much if you want to avoid chemicals in this case sadly you are better off preventing because the sad reality in almost all of these cases is that what is good for the environment is much much less effective to solve the problem.

You're right, I've never tried it myself, probably because I doubt it'll work as good as people claim it does. The vinegar is to remove smell, but how it works chemically together isn't my field of knowledge :o I (sadly) stick with chemicals but read the label and instructions carefully to make sure I don't end up damaging the pipes. I recently had a clogged basin drain, so I bought some "mild" stuff that solved my problem, but unfortunately like you said, it isn't good for the environment.
