Here’s a personal example of what’s going on at my work.....
Businesses like mine in WA state are shut down....
No dining or drinking inside,
So we were out of work.
If I don’t work, I don’t make money to survive. That’s the case for me and so many other people in America.
We do have unemployment insurance, where if I’m not working, I can collect some money.... it’s not enough to pay rent / bills etc.
I can collect $243 a week for 26 weeks (if I follow certain guidelines)
$243 a week won’t even cover my rent ($1580)
I have other costs too, food, electricity etc etc etc.
So now, into the stipulations of my unemployment insurance.
To be collecting unemployment I have to fill out paper work that shows I am looking for work at the same time. I have to go to 3 interviews a week and get them signed off.
That right there is social interaction.
Additionally if my current employer says he has work for me, I have to take whatever he will give me, or I unemployment won’t pay me at all.
So - yesterday my boss decided to open.
We are not open to customers but we can sell food for take away.
One of my coworkers (a cook) has a wife that is showing symptoms of the virus.
She can’t get tested, but her husband (my coworker feels fine)
He too wants to collect his money.
So that means I am exposed to him, who might be carrying the virus.
Meanwhile I’m interacting with others
It’s all crazy
I mean, even if I decided to say “forget all of this” and lock myself in my apartment, there would be plenty of people in a very similar situation as mine continuing to spread the virus.
We need some way of testing, or just go full on lockdown.
