kimpie here is my long explanation as to how Hilary got more votes, but still lost the election.
Im so bad at explaining things, but ill try π©
2016 election Hilary technically had more votes,
she won the popular vote,
but the president is decided based on electoral votes, of which a majority is needed.
Egghhh, im so bad.
errrr. ill keep it as simple as I can.
Each state in the US has a number of electors / electoral votes.
This number varies by state.
the number is determined partially by its population size.
California has the most with over 50,
Texas has a lot, New York. etc
My state has 12
The fewest any state has is 3
Ummmm
The voters in each state vote for who they want, and then the electors cast the electoral votes for the state.
god I'm bad at explaining.
To win the presidency you have to have the most electoral votes...
now to shift this in a way I can kinda try to form an analogy
Imagine sports.
In America we have the Baseball World Series.
the championship is a BEST OUT OF 7 games system
to become Champion you have to win 4 games, which would be a majority
pretend the number of games is the "electoral college".
and the points scored per game is "individual votes".
our teams in my analogy are WASHINGTON STATE HILARIES and the GEORGIA TRUMPS....
Game 1: HILARYS beat TRUMPS: 12-2
Game 2: HILARYS win 15-4
Game 3: HILARYS win 9-1
Game 4: TRUMPS win: 3-1
GAME 5: TRUMPS win 4-3
GAME 6: TRUMPS win 5-3
GAME 7: TRUMPS win 2-1
so in this system TRUMPS win championship because the won 4 out of 7 games
however if you look at the number of points for all 7 games,
Hilarys scored 44 and Trumps only scored 21
Hilarys scored more points (won the popular vote) but Trumps won more games (electoral college)
its an old system to kinda try and make sure each state has some representation - there's lots of talks that we need to change it / get rid of it, but for now, it is how it is.
Hilary got more votes but lost the election
